WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE AMIGA?
As we write this (March 1995), the long drawn out agony of Commodore's
demise, liquidation and possible salvation continues. Heartily sick of
it? So is the whole Amiga fraternity and many have already dumped their
machines and turned to the on-the-march PC.
Originally it seemed cut and dried, with two contenders, Amiga UK and CIE
of the States as the only two serious bidders (after rumours of some
big Japanese comany interests were dispelled). However so dispersed were
Commodores assets - plus masses of stock tied down in legal wrangles in
the Phillipines that negotiations, bid and counter bid have now gone
on for a year, during which time NOT ONE NEW AMIGA/CD32 has been produced!
The lawyers and liquidators grow fat whilst the Amiga fraternity worries
and grows thinner.(Amiga World, the first Amiga mag in the USA and the
world has just thrown in the towel as we write).
Now a new contender in the form of German giant ESCOM which has over 200
retail outlets in Europe and has justvthrown it's hat in the ring.
It also already owns the rights to use the Commodore logo.
The liquidators may now have fixed a FINAL date for the FINAL bidding
process to take place (where have we heard THAT before?) - who knows?
----and unfortunately for a lot of fed-up Amiga owners - WHO CARES?
I'll hang on a bit longer though I've just installed Visual Basic and
C++ on my PC and amd ready to start reprogramming on them.....though
I really hope it won't come to that.
I'd like to end by crying Viva Amiga! Remember the Alamo! or some such
battle-cry, but quite honestly - my hearts not in it.
